Running Michelin LTX AT2 light truck tires which performed very well in snow and wet conditions. Purchased in early December 2017 to replace the stock Kumho tires at the 36,000km mark. The Michelins perform much better, in that they grip very well, have much stronger sidewalls allowing for the Sprinter to easily stay in the lane in heavy winds and not wander.
In Leavenworth, slept in two different places on this trip. From November to March of each year, it is illegal to park on the road from 3am to 6am in many places within Leavenworth.
Overnight spot:
Along the street behind the new Hampton Inn and Suites, there are no parking restrictions in this area and very safe and quiet.

One of the favourite places to stay overnight is on the casino parking lot at Angel of the Winds in Arlington, WA. They brew their own beer on site, they have very high speed Internet, free coffee and non-alcoholic beverages, and a wonderful buffet and gaming area. It is also very quiet and safe at night, and makes for a great sleep.
GPS Coordinates: 48.211285, -122.187788
The Mountain Loop Highway begins in Granite Falls, WA, passes through Bedal, Darrington, Arlington and back to Granite Falls. Parts of the road are closed during the winter season, and other parts are unpaved.
The loop is 95 miles long, and offers many opportunities for hiking and camping along the route.
Along the Mountain Loop Highway at Deer Creek there is a snow park, deep in the Snoqualmie Mount Baker National Forest. Here you can camp for up to 14 days in dispersed camping areas such as this parking lot. There is an outdoor washroom at the entrance to the parking lot. There is a forest service road that runs up into the mountains from this spot, and 4x4 or similarly equiped vehicles can only drive on the road as it is extremely bumpy.

Nights This Trip: 2, Total Nights Sleeping in the Van during 2017: 58, Months: 1.8
Within the Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park are the Othello Tunnels, open from April to end of October each year. In the early 1900s, the Canadian Pacific Railway decided a route was necessary to link the Kootenay Region with the BC coast by rail. The railway was built over three mountain ranges. In the Coquihalla Gorge – the river cut a 300 foot deep channel of solid granite. A straight line of tunnels were built through it which are known now as the Othello Tunnels. There are spectacular viewing opportunities available on the trail, through the tunnels and on the bridges. This park highlights the Kettle Valley Railway grade that passes through the canyon and 5 tunnels which were built in 1914.

Just outside of the village, on Icicle Creek Road along the Icicle River in the Wenatchee National Forest, there are several road-side pullouts where you can stay safely overnight. During the spring and summer, the roar of the river can keep you up at night (or help you fall asleep!). In the late fall, when the snow melt is less, the river is much quieter.

Nights This Trip: 25, Total Nights Sleeping in the Van during 2017: 48, Months: 0.8
The idea of this trip was to see many of the National Parks in several states, to travel the side routes and remain off the Interstates as much as possible. The main goals of the trip were to see the Craters of the Moon, geysers in Yellowstone National Park, Pikes Peak, Rocky Mountains, Columbia Icefields and everything in-between. Finding a place to stay each night was rarely a problem.
-
Day 1 - Wednesday 02Aug2017 - Drove 479km for 6h33m from Peace Arch Park, BC Canada down I-5, to the overnight spot on the side of the road 11696 NE Ainsworth Cir, Portland, OR 97220 USA
Stopped to view the Columbia River, a waterway that is fed by the snow melt of the Rocky Mountains, which Discovery will visit later in this trip.
-
Day 2 - Thursday 03Aug2017 - Drove 586km for 6h57m along US-26 highway to NF-550, Unity, OR, USA stayed in a very small deserted National Forest Campground for $5. This was the second of three paid camping sites in all of 2017. The park host was the only other person there.
- Day 3 - Friday 04Aug2017 - Drove 395km for 3h44m from the campground in Unity, OR to Craters of the Moon National Monument, ID Craters of the Moon is an amazing place, and would come to camp here again for a much longer time. Third of three paid camping during 2017, for only $15 a night. It is designated as an International Dark Sky Park by the ida - International Dark Sky Association. Open the back doors at night, stare into the clear sky, and you will see an amazing natural light show.
- Day 4 - Saturday 05Aug2017 Drove 395km for 4h44m from Craters of the Moon Idaho, ID to West Yellowstone, MT and stayed on the side of road by an empty corner lot right across from an RV park at D Parkway and North Electric Street. GPS Coordinates 44.664828, -111.104471. Stayed in this same spot for two nights in a row after exploring Yellowstone. All Yellowstone park campgrounds were full.
- Day 5 - Sunday 06Aug2017 Drove 57.8km 1h2m from West Yellowstone MT to West Thumb Geyser Basin, saw many geysers and hot springs, and then headed back to the same overnight spot in West Yellowstone since all the campgrounds were full, and it is prohibited in any National Park to camp in a non-camping designated area including the Visitor Centre parking lots. Google does not show the complete path properly since there was no cellular signal through many parts of the park.
- Day 6 - Monday 07Aug2017 Drove 78.6km 56m (from West Yellowstone, counter-clockwise around the entire Yellowstone loop) and then back to the same spot for a third night in West Yellowstone. The Google Map is incorrect so it is not included here.
